Lawrence Anthony honoured posthumously
In a moving ceremony at the University of Kwazulu Natal, Lawrence Anthony posthumously received his Doctorate in Science honoris causa for his work in conservation. The Doctorate was accepted by Dylan Anthony, his youngest son, who said in his speech, “Lawrence’s adventures were never for adventure alone – they were based on his vision of a better world for all life – they inspired passion in others and a strong urge to participate in and support his dreams.”
When Dr Anthony, the world-renowned conservationist, known as “The Elephant Whisperer”, passed away last month he left behind an impressive legacy of accomplishments, many on-going projects and still-to-be-achieved goals. Executives who worked closely with Anthony over the past several years have dedicated themselves to picking up the reins of his various organizations. The Earth Organization has announced, per Barbara Wiseman the group’s International President, that by changing its name to The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization, it will “show our dedication to forwarding his vision.”
Yvette Taylor, Executive Director of The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization and Wiseman will take full responsibility for the environmental and conservation non-profit organization. “From the very beginning we intended to achieve the goals and purposes that Lawrence set out for the organization and his passing has strengthened our resolve,” said Taylor. Urging public support through donations and volunteer activities, Taylor said, “Lawrence set a sterling example for us and before his death we had initiated many projects that are already well underway. These will continue with even more dedication and commitment.”
Dr Anthony knew about the doctorate before he passed away and was delighted to be receiving such an honour. He joked that he would buy a stethoscope so that he would feel like a real doctor. His recently released book “The Last Rhinos” was a best seller one day after its release.
